Cape Archive Death Notices can now be viewed and downloaded on the Familysearch.org website. The links are from the catalogue HERE.

The page sometimes takes a while to fully load. Scroll down until you can see the list of Film Notes. Where there is a camera sign you can browse the images. To find the image you are looking for, search the database of the National Atrchives of South Africa for the reference, and then, based on the year, open the relevant film (the volume number is on one of the black pages on the film - there are often several volumes to a film) and navigate to the document by the reference number. Note that the reference number is the one in the top right hand corner of the actual document and not the image number.

The Cape Archives have banned digital photography and so these particular death notices have hitherto not been covered by the service provided by eggsa. South African death notices can be an invaluable resource, as they list such things as parents, spouse(s) and children. As an example, my 3xgt grandmother's death notice can be viewed HERE. It lists the dates of death of her three previous husbands and the surnames of her married daughters. However, like all documents, its accuracy is only as good as the information provided by the informant. Her mother's maiden name is listed as "Grace", which was in fact her grandmother's Christian name. Presumably she always talked about "Grandma Grace"
