My Great Great Grandfather was named Batty, I think this is the correct spelling but it could be Battie
He had a Daughter Isabella, who according to the Census was born in Hawes North Yorkshire. I have tried to trace him in the Census but have had no luck, his wife Margaret I can find and children. I need basically to know where he was born. There are possibilities in Sedbergh & Dent. As he as a shoemaker was it possibly that he travelled repairing, making footwear and therefore missed the census. Any ideas would be appreciated

This is very probably Isabella's birth registration on FreeBMD which can be purchased from the GRO and is the most dfinite way of finding out Isabella's father's name. If there isn't one on the certificate then she is probably illegitimate.
Isabella Batty December 1/4 1853 Askrigg registration district (which includes Hawes) vol 9d page 415.

So it seems both William and Margaret were married previously or William was and Margaret had two illegitimate children.

Isabella is listed in the 1851 census along with her father Thomas , born Yorkshire Dent approx. 1803. He is a master cordwainer. The old writing looks like Isabella Batter , hence the confusion.
