    Default Lip cancer terminology query

On the death certificate, there is just one word I can't read. The poor man died of lower lip cancer which spread to his lymph glands and then a heart attack.

It's a word that seems to begin with an E and ends with 'lioma'?

It looks a bit like 'Essuthlioma of Lip (Lower). Any ideas, please?

I've changed your title a little to show it's relevance.

    Hi Jesse
I've recently got a Death Certificate where one of the causes of death is "epitheliosis of lip", so I'd go for epithelioma. There's plenty of examples n the 'net.

    I'd go for epithelioma
    That's what it would be.

a tumour of epithelium, the covering of internal and external surfaces of the body: a former name for carcinoma.

Jessie - have a look at the online reference sources available through your library service. Oxford Reference includes medical dictionaries, not to mention local and family history reference books.

Thank you all so much for that (including Lesley's change of title)! I like to donate (or rather, transcribe) any certificate I get to the Cornish OPC so I needed to get it right!

Peter, I'll check out your Oxford Reference suggestion. I've saved lots of Favourites about old medical terms, etc. but no joy so I googled Lip Cancer to try to find out the correct term. I spent (wasted?) hours reading up on it but the images were very disturbing so I gave up!
