Vallis in Canada

Would like to know the area Edward, William, Henry and John Vallis came from in England. They arrived in Canada early 1800's - Edward settled in New Brunswick and died in 1834.

The only John Vallis I can see at the moment is this one

Yes, Edward was my great great grandfather. Rumour has it that his brother John was killed during the War of 1812, but no one can prove it. Don't know what happened with William and Henry. Was Edward born in Exeter?

John 1803 Naploeonic War Records ( Somerset) may not be yours.

There is this baptismal record which may match the military record in my post #3. I love the note in the transcription but the actual image is not available to view
This John Vallis's occupation is given as cord winder on his military record.

16 Aug 1776 John, son of a stranger on Topny (saith the midwife), which soon after appeared to be John, son of John Vallis.

The only information I have is regarding Edward - he married Janet Kerr in the 1820's and attained a farm in New Jerusalem, NB, which is now part of Camp Gagetown - a military training ground. Edward farmed, was killed in a fall from a horse in 1834. His son Samuel farmed the same land and had an extensive family - the eldest being another Edward who also farmed the same land and was a teacher.

I don't believe that Edward was old enough to have been in the Napoleonic wars and we have no proof, but the tale is that John was killed during the 1812 War in the battle of the Shannon and the Chesapeake - probably hearsay.

There is also a John Vallis with the same parents baptized the same place 6 July 1800 but he would be too young to be fighting in the 1812 war.

There is also a John 1803 and a Benjamin Backhouse Vallis 1806 but there are no parents recorded for these two.

It would be really helpful to have the marriage record of Edward to see if his parents were recorded but I can't see anything for him.

This is the provincial Archives of new Brunswick maybe contacting them to ask what is available could turn up something?

IF - and it is obviously a big IF - the story mentioned in post #8 about John being killed in the battle between the "Shannon" and the "Chesapeake" did happen to be true, then a boy of twelve could well have been serving on either vessel, as young lads were commonly exployed as "powder monkeys": 1812 was still in the age of Nelson, though he was dead!
