    Smile MARGARET SAUNDERS 1814

    Hi,

I have a 4x Grandmother who was convict sentenced to Australia for Robbery in 1833 and came over on board 'The Buffalo'. From looking through all her papers found that she state that she was from Radnorshire and born in 1814.

I have found the following baptism on familysearch.com:

    Name: Margaret Saunders
    Event: Baptism
    date: 26 Jul 1814
Place: Glasbyry and Llandovalley, Breconshire and Radnorshire
    Fathers name: Saunders
    Mothers name: Margaret

What are the chances this is her? and why would it only have saunders as her fathers name?

Is there any way I could find more information on her before she left wales?

If you could help that would be great. Thank you.

Do you have the information on where her trial was? The local prison might have taken her details in their quarterly Calendar of Prisoners. If you can see the details, it will say something about her crime, where it was, and who charged her. Sometimes age as well, as confirmation you have the right person. You need to look in Australia for such clues before trying to take the big jump into the blue. pwholt

The baptism in 1814 describes the child as "a base child" so she was the ex-nuptial child of Margaret SAUNDERS, no father named. I think the place name written after the name Margaret SAUNDERS is supposed to be 'Llanfihangel Fechan', a chapelry in Llandefailog-fach parish, Breconshire, but someone else might have a better idea.

Ancestry have her New South Wales Convict Indent dated 5 October 1833 which states that she is aged 20, could read, was single, Protestant and her native place was Radnorshire. She was a Dairy/Bar Maid, convicted of Man Robbery at Radnorshire Quarter Sessions on 4 January 1833, was sentenced to 7 years having had a previous conviction of 1 year, was 5' 0 3/4" tall, brown complexion, dark brown hair and brown eyes. She had a small scar on her left cheekbone, lost the top of her right thumb and had a couple more scars on her hands. She obtained her Certificate of Freedom on 23 November 1840.

Not that any of this helps to find her parents, however. Ancestry have the actual parish register image of the baptism you have found which took place at Llandovally, Glasbyry, Llandovalley Maesyronnen, Brechfa (Presbyterian) and states that Margaret was the base daughter of Margaret SAUNDERS of Llanyhangel Vychan (I think that is correct!).

There is a family tree on Ancestry “Jorgensen Family Tree”, which says that she was born 26 July 1814, but does not have any sources for that. Would that be your tree? The original of that baptism can be found on Ancestry in “England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970”, and from that it can be seen that the child baptised July 26 1814 was a base (illegitimate) child born to Margaret Saunders of (what looks like) Llanyhangsl Vychars. The Baptism took place at Llandovally, Presbyterian. That is in that data set categorised as Breconshire.

If you don’t know much about the area you will find useful information in GENUKI - https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/

There are also some private trees which seem to have information about her. Of course Ancestry also has a very good selection of convict records

The National Library of Wales has an online searchable collection of old newspapers, and from the “Cambrian” 19 Jan 1833, we can see that she was convicted at Radnorshire Sessions held at Presteign on 3 Jan of stealing 52 shillings from the person of M. Taylor, of Bron, and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. https://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/e...ART12/saunders
