Default 52nd Foot.. Capt John Sheddens Coy

    Hello everyone,

I have just researched a relative of mine and I have discovered that he was at the Battle of Waterloo, he served in the 52nd foot. It would also appear that I may have a second relative who was there but in a different Company. I know very little about the battle of Waterloo other than what I have read in a few books, I have also seen the film Waterloo but other than that my knowledge on this subject is limited. Does anyone here know much about the 52nd and what they did? can anyone point me in the right direction so that I can learn more.

as a quick foot note... I entered my relatives name into a search engine and low and behold there was a photo of him with the heading 'Veteran of Waterloo'.

    Many thanks

    Hello gasser and Peter Goodey.

Many thanks to both of you for your help.

My relatives name was Shadrack Purton. but his name doesn't appear in the memorial tablet, although his army record shows that he was at Waterloo. apparently his wife was also there and it would appear that she probably cooked and provided care for the sick and wounded. I read somewhere that when an army went on campaign women were allowed to go with the men provided that they were married. There are a number of photos of my relative online and a few newspaper articles about his death, he spent his time after the war in Tazmania guarding convicts and eventually he became a farmer. What a character he must have been.

    Kind Regards

    Default Women at Waterloo

Can't help with your Shadrack- sorry - but have just found this fascinating account of 'women at Waterloo': https://www.historynet.com/napoleonic...t-waterloo.htm. Women were soldiers, some were accompanying their husbands (and with children in tow), some were looters from the village. A woman called Martha Deacon, heavily pregnant and with three young children, walked with them in the pouring rain, the 20 miles to Brussels to find her husband. And the next day, 19 June 1815, she gave birth to a daughter, who was called Waterloo Deacon. Can we really believe the story? Well, it's a good read...

As your Mrs Purton was at Waterloo, I would guess that - as you say - she probably did the cooking(!). But as you will read in the article, women also acted as 'first-aiders' and nurses, simply because they were there. So she might have been helping in that way too.

    Waterford Mail 24 Sep 1831
Married - At Trincomalee, Lieut John M'caskill of the 79th Regiment, to Miss martha Deacon:- and Ensign M E L Barrowes, to Miss Waterloo Deacon, both daughters of Lieut Thomas Deacon of the Ceylon Regiment, who became father of Mrs Burroughs on the field of Waterloo"

Is there some confusion between "Barrowes" and "Burroughs" in the above. They are the same person?

Many thanks to all those people that responded to my questions about Shadrack Purton, I have followed the links that you have all given me and they have been most helpful. I am going to do my best and try to learn about the battle of Waterloo and try and get some insight into what Shadrack may have experienced. Once again many thanks.

    Kind regards Waterloo
