    Hello Sue
Take a look at my post in General Chatter where it tells how to get 20 free credits on ScotlandsPeople. It may help your search.

The 1871 England census RG10 piece 3828 folio 76 page 34 has Joseph, Ann and children in Kirkdale and with them is John's brother James McArtney age 16 born Bersbrook Armagh, Ireland. It is possible that Joseph was born Ireland also.

Looking at the Scotland censuses there are quite a few McArtneys born in Ireland.

I did a general baptism search for John McArtney (variations) on ScotlandsPeople 1838 to1 842, father Joseph, without any results showing. I wonder if it is possible that John was also born in Ireland but the family moved to Scotland when he was young and he assumed he was born there?

There is a John Macartney age 21 born Glasgow boarding with the Lloyd family in Liverpool in 1861
RG 9 piece 2669 folio 115 page 36 His occupation is electrical? engineer which could be a bit of a stretch from mechanic in 1871.

    Hi Sue
no worries about getting back to me it has only been 24 hours

I can't see a Joseph M*C*artney on the Scotland censuses as yet. I did find this birth for James son of Joseph but of course James in 1871 says he was born Ireland. So the name is correct, the birth year is fine as is the father's name but not the place of birth. And I can't find any of them on the 1861 Scotland or England censuses.
    James Mccartney
    Birth Date - 10 Jul 1855
    Birth Place - Hawick, Roxburgh,Scotland
    Father - Joseph Mccartney
    Mother - Catherine Richardson
