Default Ezard & Sykes, Manchester, 1870s

In the 1870s, Charles EZARD was in partnership with Isaac SYKES and traded as Ezard & Sykes. They were iron founders, based at Wellington Iron Works, Bradford, near Manchester. He applied to register the design of numerous small household items, e.g. trivet, ashpan etc. These can be found at The National Archives in series BT/ 43, 44, 45. Many of the items might have been registered 'just in case' but never manufactured. I do not know.

A third man, Richard Rowbotham, had originally been in the partnership too, but he left the business in July 1871 - see London Gazette, July 25 1871, p3323.

I have been searching, fruitlessly, for more info about this Charles, Ezard & Sykes, and the Wellington Iron Works. Whichever way I approach it, nothing is showing up. Can anyone help, please?

    Default Rowbotham, Ezard & Sykes

Richard Rowbotham, Charles Ezard and Isaac Sykes were from the East Riding of Yorkshire. They went into partnership c1867 at Wellington Iron Works, Bradford, Lancashire. Rowbotham and Ezard were the designers, so it looks as if Sykes might have been the technical member of the team, i.e.possibly the one who understood the metals, the processes and machinery. Certainly, the names of Richard Rowbotham and Charles Ezard come up many times at TNA - because they lodged so many designs with the Board of Trade - but that of Isaac Sykes does not.

Richard and Charles were brothers-in-law - Richard had married Charles's sister Rach(a)el in 1866. In 1871, James Ezard, Charles's father, was 'Manager, Iron Foundry' and lived at 16 Hampton Street, Bradford, with his family; there were also two boarders - Isaac Sykes (one of the bosses), 38 and a widower, with his 6-year-old son.

In 1871, Richard Rowbotham left the partnership, amicably (?), and set up on his own or took over(?) running the Providence Iron Foundry, Palmerston Road, Ancoats, Manchester. In 1874 Isaac Sykes also left the partnership. Charles Ezard continued on his own. At first, he seems to have been very successful - he lodged designs with the Board of Trade some patents were granted. However, in May 1883 he went into voluntary liquidation and disappears from the records in England.

Meanwhile, Richard Rowbotham seems to have been successful with the Providence Iron Foundry for many years. I have found records through to the 1890s.

I have also noticed that there was a Scotia Iron Foundry just outside Manchester, so perhaps there was a great deal of competition in this field and that might have been why Charles Ezard went under. This is just speculation - no proof whatsoever.

I think I will leave Ezard & Sykes here, because I wish to concentrate on Charles - please see the next post I am making to this thread.

Default Charles EZARD: Family and background

Charles EZARD was born in 1840, at Kilham near York. He was the second child/son of James and Sarah Ezard. The family moved around a bit during his childhood. In 1851, they were in Grimsby and James was a coal merchant (HO 17 Pce 2113 Folio 302 p9); in 1861, James was a boot & shoemaker in Scarborough (RG9 Pce 3616 Folio 90 p8). Significantly, in that census, three of the Ezard sons were involved in metalwork in some way - Charles (21) was a moulder, Henry (19) and whitesmith, and Alfred (14) a blacksmith.

It looks as if Charles married Sarah SALTMER in 1861. The first reference to the business venture in Manchester (Rowbotham, Ezard & Sykes) is in 1867.

In 1871, Ezards and Rowbothams were living within a few doors of each other in Bradford Road, Manchester. William Ezard (my gt x 2 grandfather) was at No 195 with his family; Charles and family were at No 201, and Richard and Rach(a)el Rowbotham at No 203. (All very cosy?)

Fast forward to 1881....Charles, Sarah and their brood of eight children are living at Cliff Grove, Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Norris. These are the family details from the census (RG 11 Pce 3474 Folio 43 p 26 ); surname is EZARD:

Charles Head 41 Holloware Manufacturer b Yorksh. Kilham
    Sarah 40 b Scarbro'
Harry 18 Learning the trade (holloware etc) b Scarbro'
    Maria 17 b Scarbro'
    Alfred 16 b Scarbro'
    Lily 10 b Manchester
    Lucy 9 b Manchester
    Wilfred 7 b Heaton Norris
    Ernest 4 b Heaton Norris
Elsie 2 mths b Heaton Norris

Charles then disappears from the records - or perhaps I have not looked hard enough. Whichever, I have a hunch that he and family may have emigrated - possibly to Australia, possibly to Victoria. (There are 'a lot' of EZARDs, which is an unusual surname, in Victoria - particularly round Melbourne.)

So I would be very grateful if anyone can shed a light on what happened to Charles Ezard and his family.

    The hunt continues....

A big 'thank you' to everyone who has taken an interest in this seemingly rather niche thread. It could be leading anywhere and everywhere!
