    Default British railway development overseas

On the subject of railways, perhaps I can get some information on British railway development overseas. My g-great grandfather went to Brazil and died in Pernambuco between 1855-59. He was listed in the 1881 census as a civil engineer living at "Tonbridge Wells to Hastings Branch Railway", Ticehurst, Sussex. Could you offer any insights into which railway he may have been working for and how he came to sign up for work abroad?

    Hello
I have moved your post to a thread of its own in the Occupations - Railway forum. This will show as a new post and hopefully generate more attention. Its new title is British railway development overseas. This can be changed if you like.

    Hello
I found this paper written by Caroline Dougherty
The Fall and Rise of the British Railway Industry, 1847-1900

I haven't read it but hopefully it will help.

I've sent a PM to the OP directing them toward a Forum that specialises in Railway History.

Thank you Ken, both for helping the poster and letting us know.
