Thomas Birchley served in RFA from 1808 to 1833. Waterloo Medal Roll in Rocket Troop.
Married to Maria, 8 children baptised at St Mary Magdalene Woolwich 1818 to 1836.
Also, possibly a son Thomas born 1816 and a son Alfred born 1838.
Cannot find records of marriage and birth of son Thomas.
If they were when on campaign, does regiment keep records, how can they be accessed?
No records found in IGI, Ancestry, FMP or Overseas GRO indexes.
Any help welcome!

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the prompt response.
Thomas was christened as a Birchby- as am I - in Chorley, and has a cousin Thomas a year older/younger.
I am trying to separate the two.
National Archives has him in RHA as a Birchby, but Waterloo Medal Roll cites a Birchley.
Mis-pronunciation, spelling, transcriptions etc; some even repeated on later census info.
Will try and locate the above wedding record.
Thanks a lot, Glenn

Looking at the image in UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949 (WO100) on ancestry I was undecided as to Birchby or Birchley until I found a Wm Webster in the far right hand column, about 18 entries up from the bottom. This lower case b also has the little curl in the upstroke where it meets the straight down stroke (if you see what I mean )
So now I too am inclined to go for Birchby.

The marriage record Peter gave and I looked at on ancestry doesn't give any helpful clues. Both of this parish (Plumstead Kent) bachelor and spinster. Married 8 April 1817. Thomas made his mark and Maria signed her name. It looks like the two witnesses signed their names also - Wm Beaumont and Marianne Loy. A Marianne Loy married a Saint Patrick James Gilchrist in 9 Aug 1821 St Marylebone. A George Loy was a witness
This marriage date fits with the births 1818 but not one for a Thomas in 1816 unless born well before the marriage.
Oh and reading Thomas army records the name can look like Birchley and Birchby even when the names are only two lines apart but I do think it is meant to be Birchby and the writer just got a little loose when finishing off the 'b'
