    Smile Jane Nixon - Cambridgeshire

I've been trying to find out more on my father's side with Jane Nixon 1822-1885. She was born into aristocracy in Brampton, Cambridge England. She was disowned by her family for marrying their landscaper John Martin 1828-1908. I wouldn't doubt she talked about them very much since she was shunned. And I wouldn't doubt that is why they immigrated to Canada in 1854. Any info to her life in England would be appreciated.

I apologize if I post things in the wrong places. I'm still figuring out the site.

    Thanks

    SandraL

    Welcome SandraL
I have separated your post from the Introduce Yourself bit and put it in the Cambridgeshire forum as we are now in research mode

You have the marriage certificate for John and Jane? So you know her father's name and occupation.

    Hi
I have just taken a look at the marriage details as to place and Brampton according to FreeBMD is/was in Cumberland. Now that is not Cambridge and is in fact 4 hours or so from Cambridge if I am reading things correctly.
I am going to have to ask some others who have a better grasp of UK counties and your post may be moved again, so watch this space
Oh, and please don't be surprised and too disappointed if the family tale of marrying beneath her does not live up to expectations.

    Thanks for your reply.

No I do not have a marriage certificate. I assume they married in 1848 or so since their first child Anne Elizabeth Martin was born in 1849. And no I do not have a name or occupation for him.

If your marriage date is correct then perhaps that is why they shunned her for having a child out of wedlock. Unless the dates I have are not correct. Which is very possible.

John's father was Elisha Martin 1800-?

And thanks for moving the post to the right place.

And whatever the outcome is, it is what it is.

    Hi
You really do need that marriage certificate which can be ordered from the GRO Here using the details I gave in post #2 Without it anything we may find is just "best guess" and whilst it may turn out to be correct after purchasing certificates it is best to be sure that all your hours of research have actually been used on the correct family.

Their portraits are on my photobucket site on page one. The first 2 pics are them. The portraits were done in charcoal.

Things are getting a little complicated

Here is the birth registration for Anne Elizabeth on FreeBMD

Ann Elizabeth Nixon registration district Brampton vol 25page 38

This registration suggests that the father was not named on the certificate but could still have been the child of John. Or he may just have informally adopted her as his own after his marriage.
I think Jane was housekeeper to a doctor in the 1851 census

Jane Nixon 28 Single housekeeper born Brampton

If this is Jane then where is Anne Elizabeth?

In my files it states they came to Canada in 1854. So far I am not able to find what ship they came on.
