There are a number of John Davies born in Builth, Breconshire.
    4 born in 1840
    5 born in 1841
    5 born in 1842

I think you have a hard job here. i will look and see if I can find a marriage.

I take it you have one of the children's birth cert. as you have mother's maiden name.

I don't have any paperwork for this family line, only oral tradition, most of which is proving suspect.

This could be the marriage registration
    On same page FreeBMD
    Marriages December 1/4 1864
    John Davies
    Emma Powell
    registration district Presteigne
    11b 309

Purchasing this certificate would give you the names of the father's and their occupations.

The 1871 census has John Davies born Aberedw, Radnorshire not Builth Breconshire as in the 1881.
But Free BMD says Builth spans the boundaries of the counties of Breconshire, Powys and Radnorshire.

familysearch.org has a baptism for a John Davies 6 March 1841 Aberedw, Radnorshire to parents James and Esther

This would appear to be Esther and children in 1841 Joanna and John's baptisms are on FMP.
    1841 HO107 piece 1453 book 1 folio 8 page 8

Civil parish Aberedw. Registration district = Builth. County - Radnorshire

    James davies 30 ag lab
    Ester Davies 30
    Anne Davies 10
    Gwen Davies 8
    Mary Ann Davies 5
    James Davies 4
    Joannah Davies 2
    John Davies 3 months

    All born in county

I am not saying this is your John just that he is a likely contender. You do need that marriage cert.
