according to the image of the 1871 Census, (RG10, Folio 14, Piece 821) Charlotte is listed as daughter, not grand-daughter and, given Maria's age, that is possible. Have you found James on the 1861 Census? Were Maria and Charlotte living with him then?

Hi Tony
Do you have the piece, folio and page numbers for the 1881 census please?
I know it means spending money but the birth cert will tell you who her parents are.

You beat me with the request for the 1881 reference Rebecca!Sometimes paranoia is just having all the facts.

hi chrisanel,
i have just got of the phone to bath registry office, the only way is to buy a certificate, i will, it will tell me her mother,s & farther,s name, but after that im lost , because in 1861 census she is down as charlotte cook, but in 1871 census she is down as charlotte james, i have searched both but no luck, unless she immigrated away.
thank,s for all your time, tony.p
