My Grandfather William James Whippe : Royal Fusiliers No. 7649 was according to his military record, on the expedition and involved with the invasion of Tibet and Gyantz in 1903 - 1905. He was awarded a medal for the Sikkim Expedition of 1904 and was part of the Escort of Tibet
I am unable to find out where he was stationed at this time. He was in the 1st Batalion Royal Fusiliers with the Colours but this period of his life has been hushed up in the family and I am very interested to find out what his involvement may have been.
Can anyone give me any hints as to where I may be able to find more detail of his movements within this period. Are there any records that I could look at regarding his regiments movements in more detail.
When he came back in 1905 it is rumoured that he was also 1 of the 100 special body guards to the King on his world tour but again I can not find any evidence to support this. Where could I go to find more information on this period too. I have read serveral accounts of a world tour but not sure if my grand father was actually there.
Any help or pointers would be much appreciated

Hello
My great uncle was in this invasion of Tibet. He was in 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. At that time they were attached as European cadre to the 7th Indian [Meerut] Division. It might be worth seeking out regimental diaries to see if your ancestors unit was attached in the run up.

Many thanks Fras for your information. I will at least be able to have a look if the diaries would help. Would they be held at the National Archives or some other place?
I looked on the web regarding the history of the invasion and it was very interesting and it looked as if it was quite a hard battle. Also it looks as if it was an embarrassment to England too. Possibly the reason it was hushed up so much.
Thanks again Fras
Best regards

Hi Carol
Not my field really, but I've found the National Archive useful in the past if you can find the right source. The Royal Fusilers have a website I believe and there's always the British Army website.
Happy hunting
