Can anyone please identify a medical condition which is mentioned in a newspaper report of 1917 concerning a soldier? It says, "He has been in England for some months owing to pleurisy and pyrena." I have Googled 'pyrena' and come up with nothing medical. (I have checked the scan I took of this section of the newspaper; they may of course have made an error in their typesetting).

Could be pyrexia - this is mentioned a lot in the war diaries. Usually recorded as PUO (in the diaries I've seen) standing for Pyrexia of Unknown Origin ie high fever and they don't know the cause.

Could be pyaemia which is the formation of abscesses in internal organs, in this case probably his lungs
which in those days would lead to blood poisoning.

That might fit too. Whichever it is, the poor chap was rather ill.
