    Default Haisborough Sands Disaster 06/08/1941

I am looking for information about this disaster and more specifically the SS Deerwood, which was one of the Merchant ships that ran aground that night. My Uncle Sailor Frank Craigs (20) from Jarrow and Able Seaman Albert James (21) perished on the Deerwood. I can find little information about the Deerwood or what happened and why or how my Uncle died. I would dearly love to be pointed in the right direction for more information. It is incredibly sad that everyone else apart from these two young men were rescued. There was a family story that Frank died because he had escaped but went back for the cabin boy! This is clearly at least in part untrue as Albert James was one year older than Frank. I don’t suppose I will ever find out the full story but any information would be great and a photograph of the SS Deerwood would really be special. Thank you

I put SS Deerwood into an internet search and found these sites:
    https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?10090
    https://www.sunderlandmaritimeheritag...ata_Crowns.php

Doing the same with Haisborough Sands Disaster I found:

The National Archives might have some merchant seaman records: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/r...nafter1917.htm

There was a board of enquiry into the disaster,,,but the record has not been digitized,,so a visit to the national archives would be required,,,,,,or you could enquire into getting a copy of it.

Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum, Thomas.
Geordie was last here in May 2014. If he’s still using the same email address, he should get a message telling him that someone has answered his thread, and hopefully he’ll visit.
    Good luck!
