It had to happen sooner or later - trawling through the Scott section of the WW1 Service Records (WO 363), I've come across 2 different men (1 killed, 1 survived) with the same Regimental Number (21437).

I've noticed that some men made it through from 1914 (and earlier) to the end with just one Number. Others had as many as SIX changes. The indexing system on Ancestry tends to record only the earliest, but medals awarded will be under the last.

All very confusing, not made any easier by human error on the forms (transposed numbers).

The moral of this message is - don't assume that your man's not there if you can't find his number!

For those who are interested to see the two 21437's above:

13409-13440 (Joseph Norman) & 21684-21708 (Robert)
