The fire at the National Archives today thankfully didn't affect any of the priceless records, but it makes you think. Mind you, if I had been worried about the records recently it would have been because of the proximity of TNA to the River Thames!
Anyone planning a visit to Kew in the next couple of days would be advised to check that they have reopened.

I would expect all the documents to be in a water-proof, fire-proof and bomb-proof vault deep underground in a massive tunnel (water-proof of course!) but it does make you wonder how secure they are.

A timely reminder to us all to make sure that we have copies of our records safely duplicated.
Don't forget your photos, as they are another item which can be so easily damaged beyond repair.
