    Default Joseph Galloway, keelman...

Would be very grateful if anyone could give me any interesting information about the 'Keelmen of Tyne and Wear'

My great-great grandfather Joseph Galloway (born about 1856) is listed as 'keelman on a barge' (so I am assuming he was on the Tyne or Wear) and I would just be interested to see what sort of life this was and what an average day was like.

    Any info would be great,

    thanks

A Google search for.......... "keelmen +barge" finds a few links, though not necessarily in the time frame you're interested in but do give an idea.
