Hi there
I have recently found a Silver War Badge in the dirt on my 320 acre property here in Queensland Australia. I would love to know who the badge was issued to. The number on the back is A 54235. Am also wondering what the 'A' prefix means. Any information at all would be handy for my search.
Thanks kindly
Asherall

Welcome to Brit Gen!
The website here
Of course, I couldn't resist checking Ancestry. Badge number 54235 was issued to Private Harold Hattersley, S.Staffs Rgt (South Staffordshire Regiment), regimental number 9454. He'd enlisted on 2- Apr 1914, discharged on 29 Aug 1916 due to wounds. He'd served overseas.
There is no mention of the "A" in the database, and no mention of separate badges/numbering for Commonwealth troops.
I'm glad you asked about this - I didn't know about the badges until you mentioned them. That database will be very useful!

I've seen a list somewhere which lists A as Australia but also as certain other things. But in view of where it was found, this may be the file you need -

Thanks
Thankyou to all that have responded. I got excited over the owner of the badge being Harold Hattersley, however I shall now endeavor to search Australian records knowing what the A prefix means. I do find it strange that the same number would be given twice even if in different countries. If any more information is forthcoming I would be very appreciative. Thanks once again for all your help.
