    Smile Bonwick,Hoadley,Fagence, Roberts Chapman

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to find information regarding my dads family, who were Gypsies on Hurtwood Common.
My gran was phoebe Hoadley Roberts born to Annie Bonwick and Philip Chapman (was Roberts). phoebes' siblings Were: Caleb, Henry, James, William, Arthur. All living in one Gypsy Tent 1911 in Caterham.

Philip Chapman and Annie Bonwick my gt.grand parents also lived on Hurtwood Common Peaslake, Shere near Guildford. Which is where my aunties were born in a gypsy tent there...all seven children born on Hurtwood and three born on Field Common.

They were moved off in 1934 to Field Common Walton on Thames Surrey by the council.

    Many Thanks

    Sheila Anne Fagence-Sewell

The census indicates the couple have been married 8 years and had 4/4 living children. One appears to be missing from the census! They appear to be pitched between the Gamekeepers cottage Chalkpit Cottage Godstone Road & Gables Whitehill

Not sure where to 'take' you now!

It is not unusual for male romany to change their surname to that of their mothers maiden name.....I think you may find when
romany are 'pitched together they are related' which is why I have given you the info.

the 1881 census can be viewed free on subscription sites together with www.familysearch.org ( includes church records)

certificate / event look up is at www.freebmd.org.uk

Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums Catherine,
Sheila hasn't been on the forums since she posted this message but if she still has the same email address as when she joined she should receive an email notification of your post. Another way to get in touch is by private message (pm) which you do by clicking on her user name and choosing Private message from the drop down menu. This also depends on her having the same email email address.
    Good luck
