Hi. I do not have access to newspapers and live abroad. I am looking for ‘Bastardly’ case with the name of the father Jack Black / Swartz or Jack Martin. He lived in Manchester UK, baby born in Bradford UK and mother of baby came from Grimsby UK.
Brick wall now for many years. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum.
You will find a wide range of newspapers available of the British Newspaper Archive HERE. They also have a partnership with Find My Past HERE but with a slightly smaller range.

Some local libraries make FMP available to their members.

It would help if you added information such as the years involved, as well as anything else that might make your target stand out from the crowd.

    Hello Annie,
    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

Because you seem to have been very cautious in how much information you've given, I presume that you are aware that under our T&Cs you're not permitted to post details of anyone who you know (or suspect) to be still living. I therefore presume that this is fairly recent (post-1940 at the earliest) history.

I initially thought that Jack Black might be a fairly common name in Manchester, but it seems it isn't, and Jack Martin isn't that common either. Sheer bloody-mindedness has finally lead me to what might be a result but this is all dependent on how long ago you're talking.

The 1939 Register has a Jack Wolf Black, born in 1914 living in Manchester with parents Leon and Fanny.
The family is living in Manchester in the 1921 census. You will need to search for Leon Black, aged 49, in order to find Jack as his name is spelt slightly differently. We are currently allowed to give only details which appear in the free index to the 1921 census which is available exclusively on Findmypast (FMP).

Searching for birth registrations for any of the children in Manchester kept drawing a complete blank until I searched for Esthers born in Lancashire, then it was bingo time, Esther Schwartz, born in Prestwich registration district, mother's maiden name Greenberg. Which then lead me to the birth registration of Jacob Wolf Schwartz in 1914 in Prestwich registration district, mother's maiden name Greenberg.

Jack Woolf (sic) Black's death was registered in Manchester registration district March quarter 1975. Jack left a will, his middle name in the Probate Calendar being recorded as Wolf. You can send for a copy of his will.

From the little you've said, I have a feeling that your brickwall might only be definitely solved by DNA, and that will only work if the father, or someone closely connected to him, has had a DNA test as well as either the baby or someone very closely connected to him/her.

I did have a look on FMP for Jack Black's death being mentioned in the newspapers but drew a blank. I don't know if this is because the relevant newspapers have yet to be uploaded to the BNA, or whether there is no mention of his death. The Probate Calendar says he died on 6 March 1975 in Prestwich so you could ask whoever has the local newspapers for that area (Manchester library??) if they could please, pretty please, have a look, and if successful send you a copy of the entry. Might be free, might cost you a tenner - depends how much you're willing to pay for information.

Thank you so much for you search results. Much appreciated.
All people mentioned are no longer alive.
DNA matches all point to the Black family, 391 Waterloo Road, Cheetham Hill Manchester and the name Jack Martin is present at this address, electoral register, 1932, but in no other documents i have found. Others on this Electoral register are all the DNA Black family.
I will continue my research with the information you have provided.
    Thank you

What are the names of the members of the Black family in that 1932 electoral roll?
