You're quite right. I'm really sorry if that sounds at all condescending because it's not meant to, at all - I just looked up Vincent Hughes on the Censuses and came up with Vincent Young Hughes, I didn't think of looking at the birth registers, but I see now that there is a Vincent Hughes born in Q4 1901 in Llandilofawr R.D. But you're also right to be wary and buy a certificate to make sure you have the right chap.

Right, scrub all the information about Vince Y Hughes; I messed up when looking at the 1911 Census. Here is 1901 Vincent (fingers crossed):

1911 census transcription details for: Gorswen Maesybont Llandebie

    National Archive Reference: RG14PN32975 RG78PN1891 RD598 SD6 ED2 SN51

    Reg. District: Llandilofawr
    Sub District: Llandybie

    Parish: Llanfihangel Aberbythych
    Enum. District: 2

    Address: Gorswen Maesybont Llandebie
    County: Carmarthenshire

HUGHES, Mary - Head - Married - 49 - Working On Farm Dairywork - St Peters Carmarthen
    HUGHES, Edwin R - Son - Single - 22 - Colliery's Shot Firer Underground - Llanddarog Carmarthenshire
HUGHES, Evan Tom - Son - Single - 17 - Colliery Labourer Underground - Llanddarog Carmarthenshire
    HUGHES, Margaret A - Daughter - 12 - School - Llanfihangel Aberbyttich Carmarthenshire
    HUGHES, Vincent - Son - 9 - School - Llanfihangel Aberbyttich Carmarthenshire
HUGHES, Henry - Son - 8 - Llanfihangel Aberbyttich Carmarthenshire

    They are all bilingual.

Mary gives herself as married and Head of Household, although the Enumerator has underlined it, as if to question it, just as he or someone else has crossed out that she has been married 32 years, had 11 children living, of whom 5 have died.

    I shall pursue the chase.

I can't find Evan Hughes on the 1911 Census, but I can't find a death record for him either, at least, not in Carmarthenshire.

He and Mary appear to have married in 1879, but you're getting into murkier waters here, as there are three men for two women, and both the women are called Mary! Mary Jones or Mary Williams ... It reminds me of when I found an ancestor called Mary Brown

For reference, as freebmd don't seem to throw it up, it's

    Name: HUGHES, Evan
    Registration district: Carmarthen
    County: Carmarthenshire
    Year of registration:1879
    Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    Volume no: 11A
    Page no: 1061

Well, that's according to one website, where a couple of the originals are really unclear; they're typed from when the ribbon went blodgy or needed changing or the key made holes in the page! Another site has clearer records and this one:

Name: HUGHES, Evan / REES, Mary
    Registration district: Carmarthen
    County: Carmarthenshire
    Year of registration:1879
    Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    Volume no: 11A
    Page no: 1066

Given that the other woman's name is Margaret, and that Evan and Mary's son Edwin has Rees as a second name, I'd take a punt on this ... but you're not there yet!
