Thanks Guy, i did think it was most likely they were, but the first time I'd seen the term used instead of "traveller". I suppose in those days, a caravan turning up in a field was the talk of the village/town and probably the surrounding few neighbouring villages as well, so a traveller couldn't get away with blending in as a normal parishioner.

Travellers, Sojourners, Tramps, vagrants, etc. etc..........it depends what others thought they were and looked like, or who gave the information.

Travellers could mean a host of different variations of a common theme, and without any other information, it will be difficult to ascertain what 'Traveller' actually meant in the parish records.

It's all open to interpretation, and the usual thoughts go to those who travel in a caravan.

Gypsy was another misconception which was attached to other 'Travellers', and became some sort of generalization for various groups.

During my childhood in Scotland we regularly had travellers coming to the village but some families lived in a "tent" rather than a caravan.
I wrote "tent" but in my recollection it was more like a big tarpaulin that was draped over a field hedge on one side and supported on the other (probably by poles).
    Cheers

As we have gained from the past, we owe the future a debt, which we pay by sharing today.
