Hi kategratton
I hope you can access your private messages and we can get in touch via email as we have other information about the Chadwick family also the Smiths to share
The above information from helachau is what we have gathered from similar sources and we can concur that William Chadwick married Harriett Warburton in India. I would like to move further back with William and Harriett and find out if they were both born in India or whether they moved there with family earlier - this is the next challenge.
Richard Chadwick left Army life in 1863 but disappeared from view until he reappeared married to Agnes Self in the 1881 Census in England - trying to find a lead with this - maybe the forum can help?

I don't think so - as William and Harriett's son Robert died as an infant and was buried on 25 May 1836 at Meerut Bengal India (see Ecclesiastical Returns FMP). Also there is a daughter Mary not accounted for in previous registrations around 1841 - possible but not probable. Did William and family return to England and he found work as a shoemaker after Army life? Can't find a connection with this family.

Yes, Mary, b. Sheffield, 1841 and Robert, b. Derby, 1845 are a real puzzle in '51.
But for them, in Doncaster in '51 we'd have a William, b. Matlock, 1811 + Harriet, b. Maidstone, 1809 + Richard, b. Cawnpore, 1838 - and only a month or two later a Richard, b. Cawnpore attesting at York, albeit "age 18".
Then in '61 we have a William, b. Matlock, 1811 + Harriet, b. Maidstone, 1804 living 3 doors away from a Henry, b. 1832 East India.
Intriguing!"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"
