In this thread and subsequent posts I will include data which fills in missing records relating to Herbert Courlander 1875-1948 son of Louis Courlander and Gertrude Hart. Several family trees on Ancestry Com have information on my Courlander/Hart lines but there are gaps with some later data.
The parents of Herbert Courlander were Louis and Gertrude Hart. They were married at 356 Cornwall House Kennington Road Lambeth Surrey on 19 May 1874
This was the house of Gertrude's father Aaron Hart and his wife Ann Rebecca Crawcour. The GRO Marriage Certificate records- Louis Hart 25 bachelor Jeweller 13 Thames Street Kingston on Thames- father Isaac Courlander - Gentleman; Gertrude Hart 22 Spinster no occupation Cornwall House 356 Kennington Road - father Aaron Hart Boot Maker Manufacturer. Married according to the Jewish Religion by Certificate

Herbert Courlander appears with his parents and siblings ( there were 6 children from the marriage of Louis and Gertrude) in the 1881 Census RG11 841 143 37 ( Crown Copyright,TNA) Clovelby House Hampton Wick Middx

This post provides details of the marriages of Herbert Courlander. The following GRO Marriage Certificate records details of the first marriage of Herbert.

Rossi his first wife died June qtr 1931 age 50 St Martin 1a 518 - I will post further details on her parents and siblings plus her probate. Herbert later married June qtr 1932 Hammersmith 1a 536 to Rita Brown ( her maiden name was COLLINS).
The Queenland Figaro Thurs 28 Nov 1907 records the engagement of Miss Rita COLLINS Bowen Terrace New Farm and Mr George Earle Brown late of Sydney. The Australia Marriage Index 1788-1950 records the marriage of Rita Lillian Collins to George Brown 5 Dec 1908 Queensland Reg B 007091 page 4944. The Sydney Morning Herald Thurs 24 Oct 1929 records Divorce Absolute Rita Lillian Brown and George Earle Brown.
There were 3 children from the marriage- Nancy, Frank, Shirley.
The Canberra Times Tues 17 August 1948 records- 16/8/48 at Canberra Hospital - Herbert Courlander dearly beloved husband of Rita Courlander aged 73. Private Cremation in Sydney Thursday.
In the London Electoral Rolls of 1932 Rita and Herbert Courlander were living at Wymering Mansions Wymering Road Maida Vale.
Rita died in 1966. The Canberra Times Friday Dec 30,1966- Death Rita Courlander formerly of Canberra, beloved wife of the late Herbert Courlander and loved mother of Nancy ( Mrs ARLEN) and Steven and great grandmother of William and Sophie in her 82nd year.

Records for Herbert Courlander indicate that he was a jeweller like his father and was a witness in the Old Bailey Trial of Charles William Garnett 15 Nov 1910. In the trial Herbert was an assistant to William Lund and Sons 56 and 57 Cornhill E.C. However, the British Phone Books for 1924-1927 show a change in occupation and he was listed as a Chocolate and Cocoa merchant 19 St.Dunstan's Hill E C 3 and by 1938 was listed as Herbert Courlander F.B.O.A. consulting optician 66 New Cavendish St W1 and by 1939 he was at two addresses- 66 Cavendish St and 683 Finchley Rd NW2. The London Electoral Register 1938 gave his address as 55 Stanley Gardens NW3.
By May 1939 Herbert was in Australia- The Argus Melbourne Tues 16 May 1939 had a photograph of Herbert with the comment.." Arrived at Freemantle via the Jervis Bay...In Sydney Mr Courlander will join his wife , who had been there for several months with her family". The article referred to Herbert as .." consulting optician of Harley St who intends to practice in Sydney". However, The Canberra Times Friday 14 July 1939 recorded Herbert as optician at Manuka consulting optometrist.. In 1943 Herbert and Rita were living at Stuart St Griffith optometrist Australian Electoral Rolls.

Cemetery Scribes has records of the death of both Levy and Sarah- Levy Mandelson Person ID 15220 - Levy b Nathan formerly of Tumut and Sydney Australia died age 58.... Sarah b Samuel Ha Cohen Person ID 15221 died age 54.
The Australian Birth Index has Sarah Cohen b 1839 West Maitland NSW- father Samuel Cohen - mother Rachael
The Australia Marriage Index 1788-1950 has- Levy Mandelson and Sarah Cohen married 1861 NSW Sydney. Sands Directories Sydney and NSW 1858-1933 has Levy Mandelson 220 Forbes St 1875 and 210 Forbes St 1877.

She died in London 26 Oct 1893- see Probate Rachel Cohen 5 Clanricade Gardens Middx widow died 26 Oct 1893 - Probate to Lewis Samuel Cohen and Benn Woolf Levy merchant - Effects £38816 3s 9d. The children of Samuel and Rachel- Sarah 1839-1894;George Judah 1842-1937; Charlotte 1844-1929; Louis 1846; Hannah 1848; Nathan Samuel 1850-1917; Bernard Samuel 1855-1905. Rachel and Samuel were married Port Macquarie NSW 1837. There is further data on these lines via various Australian websites.

This post adds data on one of the step daughters of Herbert Courlander. Nancy Brown born 26 August 1909 -father George Brown; mother Rita Lillian Collins Queensland P3052 Reg B020862- Australia Birth Index 1788-1922. Nancy married Albert Arlen ( son of E AARONS). Details of Albert appear in Wikepedia and a range of family sources held in Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald Thurs 3 Feb 1949 recorded.." Well known musical comedy actress Nancy Brown married Albert Arlen only son of Mr and Mrs E AArons of Kings Cross Sydney at the home of Miss Brown's mother Mrs Herbert Courlander at Canberra... Nancy Brown had been living in England for ten years where she had been Richard Tauber's leading lady in his operetta 'Old Chelsea'.
Albert was a well known composer in Australia born 10 Jan 1905-died 24 March 1993.
There is a book on the Brown family entitled " The Black Sheep of the Brown Family: A Magic Life" Nancy Arlen, Nancy Brown, Toni McRae, Pix Stories Unlimited 2001.

There is data in "The Jewish Victorian.Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers 1871-1880" transcribed and edited by Doreen Berger,1999 Pub Robert Boyd relating to Levy and Sarah MADELSOHN ( the spelling of the surname Mandelson differs but suggests an earlier possibly closer spelling of the original surname)- Birth 30.7.1878 at 49 Clanricade Gardens Kensingt a son; Death 6.10.1878 at 49 Clanricarde Gardens Kensington LEOPOLD WOLF infant son of Levy and Sarah MANDELSOHN aged 9 weeks; Birth 5.11.1879 at 49 Clanricarde Gardens a daughter.

Rossi M is my 2nd CX2, the correct spelling is Mandelson but was I believe Mandelbrot, her father Levy Pacific was so named because he was born aboard a ship on the Pacific Ocean. The family lost their money in the Australian banking disaster. His father Nathan (who I don't relate to) ran a famous hotel in Goulburn NSW. I am unsure of how many children Nathan had but 7 (including Levy) married into various branches of my family so most of Nathan's descendants are my blood cousins.
