Bruce,
This is Alan from the Wednesday Heads Group. After our session today with the NSW State Records Archivist, I came home and expanded the search for John Sheridan.
Now I am not saying the following is your John, but it would be wonderful if it is as you get to read a full page from the Tasmanian Archives on him. I went to Tasmania because the archivist floated the possibility of convicts doing their time there then buying a passage to "Sunny NSW".

You are looking for convict 63730 John Sheridan arriving in Tasmania on 03 Aug 1842 on the "Isabella Watson" from Dublin.
From there you can get into the archives and he is actually on page 173.
It is a long shot, but: Name is right, only 2 years from the 1840 you suggested and sailing from Dublin fits the Cork theory.
It's a start but it will be "fun" confirming or eliminating.
See you at Wednesday's meeting. Post here if you have any questions for the group.

Hi Bruce,
Did Edmund's parents come to Australia as well? There appears to be a brother John who also arrived here. You said that Edmund had 11 children - do you have the information on them? I can't really help you with Irish research but hopefully someone more conversant with Cork resources might be able to assist.
Regards

Hi Sue
Sorry for the delay in replying to your tread.
Edmund had 9 children. One of his children was my
Grandfathers child.
John did come out from Ireland.
Edmund lived out in western New South Wales.
I noticed on your details that you live in N.S.W.also,
myself also in the same state.
Looking forward to your reply.
Bruce
