Default Retired Iron Miner Manager (No Occ)

I found my ancester in the 1881 census, John Burns, in Brigham with the above occupation. I have been unable to find hin in the 1871 or 1861 census's; but I would like to be able to discover which mine he worked at. He was born in Whitehaven, when he retired, I presume he would have stayed where he was living when working (Brigham?), close to friends ? Was there an iron ore mine in this area? any ideas? Thanks
