The only way of knowing any of this 3Djay is to see the original documents. Ancestry have messed up quite a few of the digital images they got from the LMA. I was there the other week and asked to see a parish register microfiche because the year one of the forum members was looking for was missing completely. It was there on the 'fiche though and the archivist said it has happened before. The other thing which I find odd, is that indenture or apprentice papers normally showed the father's name but I didn't think Freedom of the city papers necessarily did. I have a tome somewhere here which might tell me what we could expect to see. Anyway, next time I am at the LMA I will call up the originals for Anne and see what turns up on them.

Hi Sue & 3Djay
I have just found that I had the following from google books in a book called The Stationers Company Apprentices 1701-1800:
3705. Jonas Goodwin; Robert; Great Carter Lane; Oilman; 5 Dec 1786; - . 7; £27.6s by his father.a
9177. Robert Goodwin; Robert; Great Carter Lane; Wheelwright; 7 Feb 1786; 3 Sept 1793; 7. £35 by his father.
Did a search in the book for Edward James but nothing came up, but I do know that his appreticeship duties were paid in 1790 and that he went on to have a bookbindin, among other things business for many years.
I am not sure that all this hasn't confused things even further. But I do know that my Jonas got an apprenticeship in this trade in 1786 and apprenticeship duties were paid for him by a James Harrison in 1787. Robert Jnr also got an apprenticeship in 1786 and duties were paid for him in 1790. How do I know that I have got it right? Maybe I never will!!
