hi, folks im researching a lance corporal 9285 henry stephen webb from the 1st battalion south staffordshire regiment he was killed in action in ww1 in 1917 he was awarded the military medal what im trying too find out is what was the military medal ?? or why he was awarded it ?? any help would be really welcome thanks ...kev

In very simplistic terms the Military Medal was the 3rd highest award for gallantry. Above it was the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and then the highest award is the Victoria Cross.

He was Sjt H.S. Webb when the award of the Military Medal was announced, in the Supplement to the London Gazette of 12 March 1917:

You have to go back a few pages to find the heading of the long list, which reads 'His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to award the Military Medal for bravery in the field to the undermentioned Non-Commissioned Officers and Men'). To find out more about why the medal was awarded you could try looking in the local paper for the area where he lived. This would also be a good place to look for more information about his death later that year, which was mentioned on your earlier thread.
You could also try studying the battalion's war diary (check the National Archives' website to see if it can be downloaded) and contacting the relevant regimental museum, if there is one.
