Default HELEN SEMIRA WILKIE NEE CRAWCOUR 1836-1916

This post develops previous threads relating to Edward Crawcour alias Cartwright and the Crawcour lines. The focus of this new thread is Helen Semira Crawcour 1836-1916 daughter of Edward Crawcour 1813-1865 and Margaret Buchanan 1798-1840. The Jewish root for Helen and her brother John Isaac Crawcour 1835-1890 is through her father Edward son of Isaac Crawcour and Semira Cohen De Lara ( see Cemetery Scribes for data on the Crawcour families). The Crawcour were Polish Jews from Cracow hence the derivation of the Crawcour surname.
Helen also known as Ellen was born Kingston upon Hull and her brother John was born in Philadelphia. Their mother Margaret died when the children were young.
The thread on Edward Crawcour shows that he met and lived with Catherine Isabella Ward nee Garnett and her children. She was a recent widow. Her husband Rev George Ward had died in India in 1840.

The marriage record for Helen to William Wilkie records:
23 Feb 1859 Parish Church St Marylebone Middx
William Wilkie full age Batchelor Gent- Leith Scotland-father William Wilkie Paper Stainer
Helen Semira Crawcour full age spinster no occup St Marylebone-father Edward Crawcour Gent

Default WILLIAM AND GEORGE WARD ALIAS WARDLOW

The trial of Cartwright v Murch reported in Trewman's Exter Flying Post Thurs Feb 6 1851 shows that not only did Edward Crawcour use the alias Cartwright but in addition, William and George Ward, referred to in the trial as his stepsons, had used the alias Wardlow. George in the trial swore that Edward Crawcour Cartwright was his step father and he and his brother William had used the alias Wardlow since they had been in Exteter. Edward Crawcour when challenged by the Judge regarding his real name was asked " Did you not assume the name of Cartwight in 1847?". Edward denied he had used the name but when further challenged by the Judge said .. " I have always in my correspondence signed Edward Crawcour Cartwright".
George Wardlow admitted that Ward was his real surname.
There is no clear rationale for George and William adopting the surname Wardlow unless it was to make them 'distinct' ( for whatever reason) from Edward Crawcour possibly for business reasons although this is pure speculation. George referred to his brother, who was not in Exeter, using the surname Ward- this brother was Robert but not named in the trial.

This post is an update on the children of Helen Wilkie nee Crawcour and should be read in conjunction with the threads Edward Crawcour alias Cartwright started 19.5.2011;Edward Crawcour-Peachey Tryon nee Chambers started 28.02.2020.

The relationship that Edward Crawcour had with Peachey Tryon nee Chambers resulted in the birth of a daughter Margaret Louisa born Edinburgh 1 February 1845. Peachey Chambers had been married to George Tryon a Major in the army in the same year as his death in 1842.

I have posted details on the Paternity Case between Peachey and Edward on the most recent thread listed above.

Margaret Louisa was a half sister to Helen and John Crawcour but she recorded her father as George Tryon on her marriage certificate suggesting that she may not have known about her real father.

I have no knowledge to confirm whether or not Helen or her brother John were also aware of Margaret or her mother. Peachey Tryon nee Chambers had died in 1856 and Margaret died young age 36 in 1881.

This post provides data on Charles Henry Wilkie son of Helen and William.
