In the 1901 Irish census there were 1489 people named John Kennedy, of which 85 lived in Co Galway. That should give you an idea of how common the name was.

Statutory recording of births and RC marriages only started in Ireland in 1864. To find a birth in the 1830s you will need to rely on church records. You need to know the exact religious denomination and, ideally, some idea of where in Galway he lived. Otherwise it’s needle in haystack.

Good sources are poor law applications which usually contain details of the person’s parish in Ireland, plus other family they may have. Check every possible census. Census returns sometimes include exact place of birth, instead of just “Ireland”. Look out also for other Irish people nearby in the censuses. Immigrants often settled near people they knew from home. Check any military records, old diaries, gravestones, family bibles, wills and obituaries. Marriage certs in some locations (e.g. US States) can include places of birth, parents, etc for bride and groom. Funeral home records can be very informative.
