Henry HEADLEY was born on 13 Jan 1824 in Tottenham, London. His mother was Mary JANSON, his father is unknown.
Mary JANSON came from a quaker family and they ensured that Henry was taken care of. Initially he appeared to be with his mother, but he was eventually sent to Hampshire in a private fostering arrangement (presumably arranged by his grandparents), he was educated in Gloucestershire, apprenticed to the MAY family in Ampthill, Beds and recieved a small inheritance when his grandparents died which allowed him to set up in business in Ashford in Kent.
There are a number of family legends (some of which I have managed to discount) about who Henry's father may have been. Would anyone have access to the quaker records which may hold some information about the identity of his father?
I am also curious about how they settled on his surname HEADLEY - is it likely to be a reference to his father, or is it more likely to be a random choice?
This has been a family mystery for many years, any insights or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Loretta

Do you have a copy of his marriage certificate in 1852, does that name a father?
Does his will have any clues? There is a probate entry in 1909.

I do have a copy of his marriage certificate and the father's name is blank.
Henry appears to have had no idea of who his father was. There is certainly no indication in his will or that of his grandfather William Janson.
I think my best option will be a trip to London to visit the Quaker Library in the hope their records hold some information about his father.
