are you certain that you are not missing a generation?
In 1891 there are 2 Bridget CURLEYs in Walsall but they are aged 53 & 54, too old to be the mother of a 2 year old. Meanwhile at 12, Railway Street, Walsall (RG12 piece 2253 folio 13 page 20) there is:
    Thomas CURLEY aged 21
    Rose CURLEY aged 22
    John CURLEYaged 2

    all born Walsall.

The Curley family had moved from 16 Adams Street by 1891 when John was 3 years old.
Strange though that it was occupied by....

Michael GAVAN, a Widower, age 48, born 1843 in Ireland, a General Labourer
with children all born in Walsall, Staffordshire
    Patrick 1871, Iron Caster
    Thomas 1875 Errand Boy
    Kate 1876, Cecilia 1878, Michael 1880 and James 1881

There is a marriage registration with a James Curley and a Bridget Gaven in Walsall in June 1888 on the same page.
I wonder if it would show Michael as the father of Bridget?
In which case, she may have gone to the home of her parents to have baby John.

I wonder how close the birth and marriage dates were?

I might be jumping the gun here but on Family Search there is a birth registration of a Michael Gaven on 1 Oct 1842 in Galway. Parents are Thadeo (Thomas?) Gaven and Celia Clarke.

Not sure though, as there are other Michael Gaven baptisms.
