Default Layton/Leighton, Rumbelow, Gray, Rolfe ties

In my research I have discovered several connections between the Layton/Leighton, Rumbelow, Rolfe & Gray families, primarily from around Cambridgeshire & Suffolk. All these families are of Roma Gypsy blood & their names pop up amongst other well known Gypsy families.

As I move through my research which is mainly at present regarding the Gray family, I keep running into connections or reference to the above other families. They all appear as most Gypsies do, move in similiar locations & circles due to these ongoing family ties, some known but many unknown at present.

    Some examples are;

    __________________________________________________ _________________________________________

All of the families above all have connections with Cambridgeshire & Suffolk where at times branches of all these families have relocated, mainly from Cambridgeshire initially to then Suffolk.

I'm descended from the Gray & Leighton/Layton families but,it is possible that I may also be descended from the other above mentioned families also.

I would appreciate any input from any other researchers from the Leighton/Layton, Rumbelow & Rolfe families that may have similiar connections ?

    Rico
    Dear Rico,

John Layton is my Seventh Great Grandfather and Mary Layton is my Sixth Great Grandmother. Robert Rumbelow is my Sixth Great Grandfather. My Rumbelow ties go back to my 11th Great Grandfather. Until I came across your post, I had no idea they were Romas. Are you sure about this?

    Cheers,

    Don

    Hi Don,

Yes, my family are of Roma Gypsy origin as stated, & I also speak Romanes.
Some of the family branches naturally became more Anglicised & lost their Roma cultures, in other families the Roma
blood & background was "hushed" up not passed on to the next generation while others it's a bit of this & that.

    Cheers

    Default Grays in Australia

    Hi Rico

I am a descendant of Henry Gray, b. 1804 in Isleham, Cambridge, England who emigrated to South Australia. I had no idea that he was from a Roma Gypsy family. I would love to learn more about the Gray family, if you have anything you can share, and about Gypsies more generally. Is there anything you would recommend I start with?

    Thanks
    Tegan

All of the families above all have connections with Cambridgeshire & Suffolk where at times branches of all these families have relocated, mainly from Cambridgeshire initially to then Suffolk.

I'm descended from the Gray & Leighton/Layton families but,it is possible that I may also be descended from the other above mentioned families also.

I would appreciate any input from any other researchers from the Leighton/Layton, Rumbelow & Rolfe families that may have similiar connections ?

    Hi Tegan

I am also a descendant of Henry Gray (via Felix Gray). I have been researching the Gray family on and off over a few years (more off than on lately). I have just got back into it and was doing a search and found your post.

I very much doubt I can add any more than Rico - there is a significant amount of research there and much more detail than I am across. I see you have posted on a Rootschat thread. Another Rootschat thread has further information that you may not have seen (apologies if you have):

    https://www.rootschat.com/forum/inde...topic=277347.0

This second Rootschat link above has a lot of information provided by Nightmare. I suspect that Rico and Nightmare may have some sort of connection (and possibly both are descendants of Henry Gray's brother (William) who ultimately settled in NSW via Tasmania).

An65 (who regularly posts on Rootschat) also has her own website (Seraphim Angel) with a fantastic amount of Gray (and other) gypsy genealogical info:

    https://www.geocities.ws/seraphim_ang...psyindex1.html

I also have some information on the South Australian Grays and their connections - though not very well organised at the moment. However, given you appear to be based in Adelaide, you may be more across this information than I am.

    Kind regards

    Grayaust
