I'm trying to trace the parents of John Atherton who was born in Wigan in 1781.
He was a gardener and eventually left Wigan and settled in Outwell in Cambridgeshire where he had the following children:
Thomas 1801
Mary 1802
John 1804-1810
William 1805
Joseph 1807
John 1814

Family Search has this record:
Birth: 14th February 1780
Christening: 5th March 1780 Wigan
Father: THO ATHERTON
Mother: BETTY ROBY
The batch number is C005564, with the film number being 6904006.
I know that it is a year out from that stated, but you never know...
Perhaps order it from your local Family History Centre so that you can see if there are any other clues.

Hi all
I'm now pretty certain that John was born in Blackrod, near Wigan in 1781. His father was John and his mother was Alice.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I can go from here? The Blackrod parish records in book format are hellish expensive at £25

lovely!... thanks Jan
I've also found online a brilliant source for the Lancashire Parish Registers at:
https://www
.lan-opc.org.uk/
... and this has already shot down my theory that John was born in Blackrod... one did but died several years later.
oh well... back to the drawing board!Last edited by Jan1954; 03-01-2013 at 5:38 PM. Reason: Url split - they ask for donations

A little late perhaps, but I've only just seen this post.
I'm doing a One-Name Study into the name of Atherton and I have, on my website, Thomas Atherton b. 1801 Outwell. It would appear at first glance that I do not have his siblings or parents! My website at www.athertonons.com explains what I aim to do and a quick link to Thomas b. 1801 with family is at: https://www.athertonons.com/getperson...D=I1716&tree=1
I would be interested to know how you identified John as the father born Wigan - do you have any other detail that could help us identify the family?

John Atherton
A John Atherton born in Blackrod, WIgan 1837 was the son of Edmund Atherton of Blackrod Farm and came to Australia as a child with his family. They arrived in 1844 in Sydney. John was a cattleman and discovered tin on the tablelands that would later bear his name. The area was eventually named after him - the Atherton Tablelands. I live on the Tablelands now and his descendants are family friends.

Unfortunately, Atherton, is a very common name in Lancashire. I assume the parents info of John and Alice came from Lancs OPC. Blackrod isn't in Wigan so that may not be your John Atherton.
