Question E.J.T. Fletcher Unknown Regt & Rank

    Can you help please.

All I know is that E.J.T. Fletcher was one time President of the Hull Branch Old Contemptibles Association.

I have an O.C.A. Long and Faithful Service Medal with his name on it.

Any help with service information could bump start this research project.

Any and all pointers/information most welcome.

    Cheers

    Hi Graham,

yep had a wee look at that site but was unable to find anything much about the Hull Branch of the O.C.A.

I have been told that his name might be: Edwin J.T. Fletcher, who went to Hymers College, Hull.

Can't find any 1914-18 Service Roll for this School though to back this up.

Wonder if Fletcher might have been an officer?

Why not contact the school direct? They should have something in their archives as it has been running since 1893.

Have you looked in FreeBMD? I suppose I'd better not provide the details as he may be still alive but suffice to say FreeBMD lists only one instance (two or three events, probably of the same person) of -

    Surname: FLETCHER.
    Forenames: E* J* T

All events were registered in Hull.

If you try searching the Old Hymerians members' list for the name Fletcher you'll find someone who left in 1947 and whose initials would be E.J.T.

    https://www.
    oldhymerians.co.uk/search/

He would be much too young to be an Old Contemptible though. (Did you have to be an Old Contemptible to belong to the OCA? Perhaps sons were eligible to join too?)

There are photos of the medal here:

    https://www.
    worthpoint.com/worthopedia/contemptibles-assoc-gilt-medal-1914-160823480

The inscription on the back (from image 3) reads

    'PRESENTED TO
    CHUM E.J.T. FLETCHER
    FOR LONG AND FAITHFUL SERVICE
    - TO THE -
    HULL BRANCH'

There's a discussion about OCA records on this thread from the Great War Forum:

Hi There, thanks for all the possible avenues of research and the extra information.

    Have been informed about:

    Hull Daily Mail
    Wednesday 18 June 1947
    East Riding of Yorkshire, England

The link is to a search for "old contemptibles association" in the Hull Daily Mail.

    https://www.
    britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?frontpage=false&basicsearch=%22old%20conte mptibles%20association%22&phrasesearch=old%20conte mptibles%20association&newspapertitle=hull%2bdaily %2bmail

Can't read the actual articles but there is mention of "Chum Fletcher" in 1947 but that was all I could find.

Also Chum Fletcher and / tributes received. The family thank all relatives- neighbours for their ... ?

Wonder if anyone on the B.G.Com. would have access to these pages or information?

Sadly at the moment more questions than answers over the O.C.A. (membership/President/Ex Service).

Bad news: It would be a breach of the British Newspaper Archive's terms & conditions to do look-ups for you.
Good news: If you register with the site you get 15 free credits which should be enough to see the article yourself.

    Good news indeed.

Many thanks for that, 15 Credits with luck should get the job done on that site.

    Many thanks.
