It is going the email rounds again so beware.
Looks very official and states is from hmrc.gov.uk
Take note of the red text.

WAIT until they send you a letter in the post with your tax and NI references. Only then can you

The conmen are taking advantage of the fact that the Taxman made a mistake and lots of people are indeed due for an unexpected refund. My mother received a cheque last month, and a letter the next week saying what the cheque was for. No e-mails, no phone calls, no requests for information.

HMRC do NOT contact any of their 'clients' via e mail!
If you think about it. you do not give them your e mail address on the SA tax return form or any other form.
It is optional whether you let them have your telephone number....

But that is what the scammers will have from other sources, what they don't have is your other personal financial details which HMRC, your bank, paypal or other institutions do have and THE SCAMMERS desperately want.
DON'T GIVE IT TO THEM.
Remember the old proverb - 'A fool and his money are soon parted', it applies as much today, if not more, than in the times of our ancestors.
