    Default Adam St St Marylebone

I have a guy who lived at Adam Street, Marylebone or St Marylebone for at least 40 years. Originally it was Adam St East I believe. However, the only Adam St on current maps is near the Strand. Is the Adam St. St Marylebone of 1901 now called Robert Adam St?

Looking at both the 1881 census and the 1911, for Adam St in Marylebone, the parish is Portman Square St Thomas and nearby streets include - Portman Mews, Manchester Sq, L. Berkeley St, Seymour Mews. Is this what you have?

If so, looking at old-maps.co.uk and their 1896 map and comparing with a modern map, it appears that Adam St is now Robert Adam St.

Checking old maps and the census, this particular Adam St was in the parish of St Martin in the Fields, Strand and was not and never has been in Marylebone.

The one near the Strand, in St Martin's, is now John Adam Street.

I would agree with olliecat that yours is Robert Adam Street.

Now you have me confused. Looking at the Strand area on old-maps.co.uk, John Street is at right-angles to Adam Street. Switching views to a modern map, John Street becomes John Adam Street and Adam Street remains unchanged.

    But it's late, so ...

Yes, of course you're right, sorry.

But I think we agree this is not the street that chopendoz is seeking.

    Rather late to the thread!

Adam Street in Marylebone was sometimes noted as Adam Street West or even Adam Street, West. It is now Seymour Place.

My ancestor William Roper Gant gives his address as 5 Adam Street West in 1849 - at the baptism of his son at St Marys, Bryanston Square. In the decades following, my Gant ancestors also lived in Orchard Street, North Row, North Audley Street, Crawford Street, Paddington Street in the decades following - all locations quite close by.

    Time for some googling!

    This is interesting:

There are now some wonderful old maps of London online now. Try Horwoods Plan 1792-1799 and its revision in 1819 Also the Goad Fire Insurance maps from the 1880s. Both have house numbers....
