    Default Doncaster Sand House A Victorian Marvel

    Can any one provide any info on Doncaster Sand house and tunnels it was constructed from mid 1850s until second world war excavted around a massive block of sand stone and then rooms and tunnels were excavated

    William Senior born 1802 he bought Balby Lane Close in 1832 in 1857 the land was noted in a conveyance to Henry Senior referred to as a tenement cut out of rock sand. The dwelling consisted of some ten rooms the largest romm was a ballroom and could accomodate over 200 people

    Parts of the original tunnels are in tact but inaccesible and a huge block of flats Silverwood house now sit on top of the original sand house i am aware of many postings and pics that are on the webb but i would be very interested in any info that i may not be aware of in my research and also the Senior Family history any information would be very much appreciated Thankyou Paul

    I see it refers to Richard Bell’s book The Sand House – A Victorian Marvel, which 'although out of print, is available for reference at some local libraries in the Doncaster area.' From Google Books I see that a new edition of the book (co-authored by Peter Tuffrey) was published last year. There's a review of the book here:

    Re. the family, it is rather difficult to advise you without knowing how much you know already. Have you tried your local archives or local studies library? Also, what about old newspapers?
