    Default Patronyms

    Hello,

On his 1865 Marriage Certificate, my g/g/grandfather gives his name as Edward Newman NcNeil Marchant. His age is 45 and his father is William.

Either or both of the patronyms Newman and McNeil are found in the names of at least three generations of his descendants.

In the 1851 census, he states his birth place to be Rothsea (sic), which is presumably Rothesay, Isle of Bute. HO107/ Piece 2320/ Folio 498/ Page 12 (Copyright TNA)

I wondered whether the names Newman and McNeil are the names of his female ancestors.

Searches for Marchant/McNeil and Marchant/Newman marriages, before 1820 have produced zero results.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks,

    Josie

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in the early census returns, his name was spelled "Merchant".
