:...: My ancestors were haulage and agricultural contractors based in Madley, who kept records of their clients and work. I have some old diaries and ledgers covering about 50 years from 1889.
.
Many clients were landowners and farmers, 'though there were builders, shop-keepers, church people, publicans, private individuals and even Parishes and District Councils on their books.
.
Here is a list of names and districts . If you think your ancestors might be there, I am happy to let you know what work was undertaken for them and how much they paid.

I have just finished reading a fascinating book about Madley by Maureen Hind (and the Madley Historical Society).
It's a short history at the beginning, as seen from a time travelling machine .
The author meets the locals who show them around and chat about events in Madley during their time there.
It really brings these peoples names in my list alive.
.
The second part of the book is written and illustrated by the children themselves. Great stuff
Back to the list,
I hope it will be of use to at least one personLast edited by Chwarae Teg; 14-06-2011 at 12:01 AM. Reason: spelling error

What a very generous offer Teg. Like others my family come from a bit further away in Dorstone/Clifford but for those associated with Madley your offer would be a gold mine. I've just 'dropped in' on Madley via Google Earth it looks a very lovely spot.

Thank-you for your comments Jim and Margaret
Madley is a lovely place, 'though I have not been there for a while.
.
I am quite excited about having all this information at my fingertips
in books over a hundred years old
It is just TOO interesting to keep to myself (and my Mum agrees).
.
To put faces to the names, handwriting on the invoices and in the diaries,
makes our past more real. Am still enjoying reading the shopping book -
more lists of items bought and how much they cost ......
Talking of lists, I had better get on with it !!
