Good grief.
I had better explain. I am doing this for a person at work. She says her mother has always wanted to know about her family as she doesnt know very much about her grandfather's side. My friend wanted it to be a supprise for her. Its looking as if the cat may have to be let out of the bag. I have related all the info I was given. I wonder if the Orlando in Ireland was working in insurance or something of the same.
I have to go to work now so I wont be back till late tonight.
It looks like a weekend of pouring over all this.

Just quickly.
Olando Henry Heathcote. Born 1880 Chorley, Lancs. 1891 census shows his father as a general labourer.
The 1891 as Orlando being a glass blower.
There seems to be a big jump in status from being a glass blower to being a Co-op insurance manager in Scotland.
There must be two of them unless he was a real mover and shaker.

If so, here's an alternative approach for you (or your friend.)
Since William died after 1969, his place of birth should be recorded on his death certificate (provided that the informant had knowledge of this of course.)

If you're registered with Scotland's People you can search the 1911 census index. It doesn't show you the personal details, but just shows how many matches (if any) there are.

From this I have found there were 25 people with the name Heathcote. One was called William, but a bit of experimenting with the 'age range' search tool shows that he was in his forties. No sign of any Orlando (or Henry) or Harriet Heathcote. I didn't try any variants of spelling for the surname, however.

William Henry Heathcote was born on 23 Jan 1910. Where unknown.
His father was Orlando Heathcote and his mother was Harriet Mcgregor.
There is a strong Scottish conection as Harriet was from Scotland. Where unknown.
I have found several references to an Orlando H Heathcote in Perth. He is a Co-op Insurance manager.
The dates are 1912 and 1927.

Going back to your original information, where did you find the 1912 reference? I see two entries for Orlando H. Heathcote in the 1927-8 Leslie's Directory, Perthshire.

The first in the General Directory which has...

Heathcote, Orlando, H., district manager, Co-op. Insurance Society, 25 Kinnoull Street ; h. 59 North Methven Street.

The second in the Street Directory, which has...
