Default Newbie - Hamilton/Lawson Family History

I've just joined this Genealogy site - I'm trying to trace my husbands family that emigrated to Canada about 1900 - We have a marriage certificate for his Great Grandparents - Arthur Hamilton (27)- Journeyman Boilermaker - 205 Greenhill Road to Jeanie Lawson (20) - Cotton Yarn Winder - 4 Bouverie (?) Street in Rutherglen Dated the 27th. of June 1887. They had at least 3 children (we have the B. Cert.) Arthur (11/20/1892), Jeanie (4/16/1895), Robert (10/28/1900) all born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. My husbands grandfather was always referred to as Jock but we believe his real name was John but whether he was born in Scotland or Canada we don't know - there are no records for him or when they arrived in Canada. Where do I start to look? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the family are in the 1901 census
Arthur age 42, Jeanie age 34, George age 12, John age 10 and Jeanie age 5.
They are living in Rutherglen in Lanarkshire and Arthur was a Ship's Riveter.

I do not have further access to Scottish Records. John's birth is said to be at Rutherglen in 1891.

I can only suggest you try the Scotlands People site.
I cannot see them going to Canada but perhaps they went to America or elsewhere first.

There is also Jane Lawson living with her parents and siblings at 4 Bouverie St, Rutherglen in the 1881 census.

From the marriage certificate, what were the names of their parents?

Parents were: George Hamilton (Flesher) and Margaret Hamilton (M.S. Aitkenhead)
John Lawson (Journeyman Joiner) and Jeanie Lawson (M.S. Hamilton)

The wedding was witnessed by John Muir and Lizzie Lawson - a possible sister?

Here is the Jane Laswon from the 1881 census I mentioned in post #4. In Scotland, the names Jane and Jean are often interchanged and I would have thought this was also true of Jeanie. The address is a match to that on the marriage certificate and so is the father's name and occupation.

1881: Parish: Rutherglen; ED: 7; Page: 32; Line: 13 (care of the GRO for Scotland)
    4 Bouverie St
John Lawson 40, House Joiner, Govan Lanark
    Jane Lawson 36, Glasgow Lanark
Jane Lawson 14, Thread Mill Worker, Rutherglen
    Elisabeth Lawson 12, Rutherglen
    Peter Lawson 10, Rutherglen
    Mary Lawson 7, Rutherglen
    Robert Lawson 4, Rutherglen
    John Lawson 7 mo, Rutherglen

A possible marriage for the parents.

    groom's name: John Lawson
    bride's name: Jane Hamilton
    marriage date: 23 Sep 1864
    marriage place: Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland
    record title: Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910

We also have a photocopy of a British Passport for Jeanie Lawson Hamilton - widow age 52 - (D.O.B. August 29,1866) issued on 25th. March 1919. We think this may have been the time she came to Canada but it may have been to live with John who may have emigrated before that. We also have a number of Photo's taken by "Rutherglen's Own Photographer" 467 Kings Park Ave. Marked on the back are: Scottish Cousins - Elizabeth Robertson (Nee Hamilton) Grandmother Lawson's Sister,Elizabeth Howieson Daughter, Elizabeth Howieson Grandaughter, and Elizabeth Greatgrandaughter this may the witness Lizzie.
Another is Annie Robertson & Family 1907, Another Jeanie L. Hamilton, And the last has no photographers name but is marked 1907-Jock Aitkenhead & son (Orphaned at birth) - Jock brother of Grandmother Hamilton - east Kilbride.
We believe that only John Emigrated and was joined by his mother later and all other relatives remained in Scotland. Snapshots taken in late 1960's and early 70's show an older Jock/John visiting relatives in Scotland. We would like to connect with any of these relatives if they can be found.

This is wonderful. How and where do you find this information - I'm at a total loss on how to go about it
