I'm in the process of trying to find the history of Albert Hellyar born Dec 25, 1837, East Stour, Dorset. His mother was Martha Hellyar, a single woman. I would like to see if Albert retained his surname throughout his life or was it changed when either his mother got married or his father gave permission for his surname to be used. (example Myalls or Miles). This has been a brick wall for me for a long, long time. I went through the parish birth records for 1837 and 1838 and the only boy born with the christian name Albert is Albert Hellyar. Thank you.

I have searched on two sites for all censuses using many combinations of Hellyer, with and without the first name and the only Albert Hellyer showing was born East Coker Somersetshire with parents Abraham and sarah. I followed him through the censuses and he married anElizabeth between 1861 and 1871. 1901 is the last one he appears in, a widower, and he was still in the registration district Yeovil.
In 1861 there is an Albert Helgar but I can't see him in any other census.
Someone else may have more luck.

Had another quick search using just the full name, no age and there is one born Gillingham Dorset 1841 but parents William and Jane. I can follow him through the census also.

Do you know for certain that he was born in East Stour?
Single ladies often "went away" when giving birth, as I know from my own family tree.
Also, found a number of unnamed, male births:
Sept qtr 1837, East Stonehouse, Devon. Unamed Hellyer
June qtr 1839, St. Columb, Cornwall. Unamed Hellyar
Lambeth, London. Unamed Hellary
Portsea Island, Hampshire. Unamed Hellyer

I had an ancestor who was born 6 months before her parents were married and her birth was registered in her mother's maiden name. Her surname was changed later when her mother married. I'm looking at Albert Hellyar from the same point of view as his mother could have married later or he was adopted and his named changed to Myall or Myalls.
Thank you for your prompt reponse.

You have the same East Stour parish entry as I have.
Also, I'm looking at the 1851 census for Stour Provost and there is a Martha Myall, Head, Unmarried, age 46, Needlewoman, Stour Provost. She appears to have:
*a daughter Emma Myall, Unmarried, Age 20
*A son with Illegible name, Unmarried, Farm Labourer
*a daughter Mary Ann Myall, age 4
It's possible this might be my Albert Myall/Myalls as he isn't in the 1861 census and we understand he was a stowaway on a ship to Newfoundland in the mid 1850s.
Thank you for your assistance.

I believe the son's name is Ambros(e).
This MYALL family is also in the 1841 census for Stower Provost, at HO107/293 bk 24 folio 16 page 8 (reference to record held by TNA).
Do bear in mind that 25 December 1837 is recorded as the date of baptism at East Stour, not birth. Albert may have been born elsewhere, and perhaps a good deal earlier. Not everyone was baptised at birth.
If you can tell us why you are searching for Albert, and what your starting-point is, we might be able to help further.
