I can't seem to locate my Gt Gt Grandfather and family in the 1841 census.
Abraham Garrad was born 1789 in Witham, Essex.
He married Mary Baker in Dedham, Essex in 1812.
Mary was born 1789 in Dedham.
Children alive in 1841 were:
Mary Baker Garrad, b 1815, Downham Market, Norfolk
Elizabeth Garrad, b 1818, Downham Market, Norfolk
Abraham Garrad, b 1821, Colchester St Peters, Essex
Maria Garrad, b 1823, Colchester St Peters
William Baker Garrad, b 1824, Colchester St Peters
Ann Cawston Garrad, b 1826, Colchester St Martins
John Whitmore Garrad, b 1827, Colchester St Martins
Henry Garrad, b 1830, Colchester St Martins
Charles Garrad, b 1831, Colchester Holy Trinity
In the 1851 census, Abraham (senior) is a widower living in Culver Street, Colchester (Holy Trinity parish).
He and son John are Veterinary Surgeons.
So, why can't I find any of them in 1841?
Have tried variations on the surname: Garrad, Garrard, Garrod.
Please help!

Nice catch Lizzy, this brings in the ret of the children. Mary the Mother must have been visiting Family. Handy to have a Chemist & Veterinary Surgeon in the Family.
In Ancestry if you click to see 'others on page' you'll see them & also someone who has submitted a correction of the names.Happy Families

Yes, I noticed that, Wendy. There's also a Lionel Garrard (estate agent) and his family next door.
I wonder if the Baker family; who Mary and William are with are relatives? William's middle name is Baker. Mary's brother; perhaps?

There are a lot of tie-ups between the Baker and Garrad families!
In addition to William Baker Garrad, there is Garrad Baker, Mary Baker Garrad and William Garrad Baker.
My 2 Abraham's (father and son) were Vet's, as was John Whitmore Garrad -who served with the Bengal Army, and is therefore "missing" from the 1861 and 1871 census'.
Many thanks to all for the quick replies - it was goiving me a headache!! :-(
Now I just need to find John's military records (see posting on Military forum).

Lizzie had it right - Gunard is the worst mis-spelling I have come across yet!
The children match up with the younger members of the family - just the older children working away from home.
The marriage of Abraham and Mary Baker I already had, but thanks anyway.
Abraham seemed to be a favourite forename - just on my tree there are 6 generations.
