    Default Hospital Ships

My grandfather and his parents came over from Malta, according to my mum, on a hospital ship in about 1922. Any ideas where I can find information/passenger lists on hospital ships?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Deb,

Ancestry has incoming passenger lists for the U.K. for the time frame you are interested in. If you post the names and year of birth we may be able to find them for you.

From the way you word the question I assume you mean they were Maltese who came to live in UK.

Unfortunately the incoming passenger lists mentioned above did not necessarily include travellers from Europe and the Mediterranean area. The exception is if the ship started its voyage further away and picked up passengers from Malta en route.

You may find some useful advice on the National Archives Immigration pages and perhaps the Moving Here site although most of it is about immigration from other areas.

I wonder if it’s slightly unlikely that ‘ordinary’ passengers would come to the UK on a naval hospital ship.

The Royal Navy’s Hospital Ship in the Mediterranean in 1922 was RFA Maine https://www.roll-of-honour.com/Ships/RFAMaine.html and was, apparently, involved in the humanitarian evacuation of Smyrna in September 1922 – https://www.worldnavalships.com/forum...ead.php?t=3191
    (also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco-T...2%80%931922%29 )

It seems that RFA Maine was the RN’s only hospital ship at the time and so it would have to be this one.

It might be worth following up Royal Navy records at the National Archives for further information about RFA Maine.

Default Hospital Ship Cordra 1946 1947 England

Arthur Simkin (1910-1994) worked as a relieving engineer for H S Cordra from Oct 1946 to Oct 1947 working out of 4 Lloyds Avenue in downtown London. He was living in Worthing area at the time. I am trying to find out where the ship could be been docked. Thank you for any hints!
