Default nursery(garden centre) opposite turnham green

yes, I'm after West Middx geographical knowledge again please!
My nan's brother has told me a wonderful story about my great-grandparents meeting when they both worked for the same plant nursery (he drove deliveries, she worked in the shop). Apparently, it was diagonal to Turnham Green tube station where Sainsbury's now is (? - his description, not mine!) and they married in 1913.
Does anyone know its name and where I might find further information or photos?
    Thanks!
PS if you helped me with lower mall... i found the road but my family lived at no.2 and nos 1-5 have been demolished! still got some photos though...

I don't actually know the area, so I have no idea where Sainsburys is now but I have a map of the 1920s.
"Diagonal to the tube station", not sure what you mean by that?
North or South of the tube station, do you think?

Right, moving on I googled Sainsburys, Turnham Green. It is in Chiswick High Road, W4 1PU.
Chiswick High Road is south of the Station. If it was a nursery then maybe they grew stuff?
There is a green area on the map between Sutton Lane and Heathfield Terrace. There is a church there, it is just north of the Town Hall. Sainsburys is where a school was, opposite the church.

Over to someone with local knowledge.......

Kelly's Directory for Ealing, Acton ..., 1911, found by listing London directories at the historical directories site has, on page 652, image 689, a listing of Florists, Nurserymen and Seedsmen, which includes:-

JOHNSON THOMAS, ... Bedford Park nursery, adjoining Turnham Green station ...

p68 of the same directory says Bedford Park Nursery was on Bath Road, just north of the station. Page 286, image 315, says he had a shop next to the station on Turnham Green Terrace. A bit more surfing through the directory might be worthwhile.

There is a specialist horticultural library somewhere in London, but I can't find details at the moment. The Local Studies library covering Chiswick may also have something.

Have a look at Google street view. Immediately beside Turnham Green station is Wheeler's Garden Centre (W4 1LR).

Just took a look at Turnham Green Station on Street View - and didn't the memories come flooding back!

I lived just down the road in Bedford Park as a small boy in the 1940s.
Turnham Green Terrace was our local shopping centre - and I see that the newsagents is still in the same place, just a few doors down towards Chiswick High Street. There was a model/hobbies shop somewhere handy there too, and I must see if Bernard's the grocers and John King the butcher's is still there. You never know!
The Number 55 bus used to ply between Chiswick and Greenford - supposedly every 15 minutes.
All I remember about the railway arch (Turnham Green was on the District line) is a sign which stated "Bill Stickers will be Prosecuted". I always thought that Bill Stickers must have been some sort of criminal....

Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce!

Thank you all so much! I feel like I've learnt more about the place where I was born from all of you!
I've had a look at the map and think my great-uncle can't be right about next to the station AND where Sainsbury's is. the Bedford Park Nursery and Thomas Johnson sound like good leads to follow up. I'll let you know how I get on...

Looking at a 1972 London Kelly's directory, there is no garden centre next to the station, so I guess no connection with Johnson's. Most inner London Local Studies Libraries will have a collection of Kellys going back to the year dot if anyone is able to look.

Across the road from the station in 1912 was "Back Common", still green space as a park. I suppose it's possible the nursery used a bit of this.

I'm a bit bemused by the mention of Sainsbury's, as it's nowhere near the station.

I've had another thought - bit of a long shot but it might be worth considering...

'Diagonally opposite' the station but a little bit down the road there is a small block of shops, more or less on the corner of The Avenue and what Google Maps calls 'S Parade'. (My Mum used to call there to get her cigarettes from Miss Blackburn's shop.) There's no sign of a garden shop there now, but if you go back a few years, who knows?
