    Default Boer War Nursing Casualties

My post appears to have initially been posted in the wrong forum so I try again here.

Hello! As indicated above this is my first post on this forum.

My interest is recording female service & associated organisations casualties from all campaigns. This is not a commercial project it is purely personal and for my own interest but will gladly share what information that I acquire with any other interested party.

My project currently includes 4,000+ unfortunate ladies of which 47 are my known casualties of the 2nd Boer War. The information that I have acquired is from various sources that I hope is correct. The following is a list of those ladies by cemeteries where I understand they are buried. There are some gaps in the information that I hope members can provide, or correct, the details.

I would also be most grateful for the offer of photographs of their graves and, in particular, of the unfortunate lady herself and any other recorded details.

I thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

    Tony

An addition to my post above.

Whilst I am unaware of any official or unofficial female involvement in the 1st Boer War, particularly regarding nursing, if there were any female casualties I would be grateful for any information.

    Regards.

    Hi Tony,
I don't know your sources in compiling the list so far, but have you cross-referred with the casualty lists?
Some things I spot in no special order.................

Nursing Sister Florence BELL, died Kimberley 08/04/1900 I don't see in your list for example.

"HALL, Emily M….PCANSR ..Died..Bloomfontein ………14.05.1900" 13 May according to the lists. No idea which is correct

"CALDCLEUH, Isobel…...PCANSR…11.10.1900" J.Caldclugh in the lists.

Nursing Sister F.HINES, died Bulawayo 7/8/1900 is another I see.
Nursing Sister E.P OWEN ANSR, drowned at Germiston 25/01/1901 is another

"LLOYD, E.B……...PCANSR...Died..Pretoria…………….??.10.1901" died 24/04/1901 in the casualty lists

Some more info on some of the names
    www.
    angloboerwar.com/Casualties/casualties_nurses.htm

Are you just interested in nursing casualties or other females?
    War correspondents?

    "Kingsley, Miss Mary
Correspondent of the Morning Post, died at Simonstown on Whit Sunday, 1900, of fever, and from the results of an operation. She had assisted to nurse the sick of the Boer prisoners of war. By her expressed wish she was buried at sea. The coffin, with her remains, was taken to the Pier at Simonstown on Whit Monday, the procession being headed by the band of the West Yorkshire Regiment. It was then placed on board Torpedo Boat No 29, was taken out to sea, and committed to the deep."

Grateful for your input. Rectified some of my errors and added some of your comments as follows:-

BELL, Florence - My error missed her when listing should have appeared in my Unidentified Cemeteries list.

HALL, Emily - Both dates were listed chose 14th May as is my Birthday – Not 1900 though.

CALDCLEUH, Isobel - My typing error, Should have been CALDCLEUGH as listed in Nat. Arch. Nominal Roll September 1900.

HINES, Frances - Details that I have - Australia. Victoria Army Nursing Service. Died Memorial Hospital Bulawayo, Rhodesia, buried Bulawayo Cemetery; with photos of Hines, her grave and three memorials.

OWEN, E.S. - Have her listed with note of her drowning but our initials differ

LLOYD, Ethel - No idea why I typed that death date in and agree with you

KINGSLEY, Mary - Have quite a bit of info on her, she is well documented on Google with her photo but you details of her funeral are a welcome addition.

Regarding the photos, I did have Jessie Bradbury but not Kate Driver. I am unsure about the top right one – K Boyd (Ladysmith) as I have a Mary Sime Boyd who died at Edinburgh Hospital, Naauwpoort.

I can now tidy up some of my details. Regarding the unidentified cemeteries I suppose one can assume that they were buried where they died but, as assumption is a sin in research, I have left them open for now.

    Thanks again for your info.

A closer study of the 'Anglo Boer War' photos has resulted in two of my casualties being deleted from my casualty list. Keiron Spires list of casualties in
'Ladysmith History & The Boer War' lists Jessie Bradbury and Kate Driver as buried in Intombi Cemetery.

Third pic along, top row 'Nurses at Intombi and Kate Driver' refers to her attending the Ladysmith celebrations. I assume from the 50 year reference that this pic was published some time in the 1950s.

Third pic along, second row 'Ladysmith Anniversary 1930' illustrates a Mrs Jessie Hardy (nee Bradbury)

I have also decided that the Kate Boyd is not my Mary Sime Boyd because she looks too old suggesting that it is a well post-war pic.
