Folks, I'm going to have to wrap it up for the night...after midnight here and my meds are slowing kicking in.
However, I'm going to bookmark this page and work on both Lewis and Lane tomorrow. I've got all day to do some searching.
I've got one more item to provide on your Lewis ancestor killed in World War I. It might shed some light on things.
But there only seem to be a few possible Rosina Lanes or Rose Lanes in the 1881 census and I've just got to compare data more carefully (and for that I need time).
Thanks Mike for your assist. Together I think we might just get this all worked out but we might need a day or two.
Cheers to all from your distant American cousin,
Cary C.

Francis John Lewis War Record
Sad to say I was able to discover very little about his war record. The only information available through Ancestry.com was:
Lewis, Francis John
L/Corporal
Birthplace: London
Residence: London
Service no. 18540
Unit: Devonshire Regiment, 9th (Service) Battalion.
Killed in action 27 June, 1917
I was hoping to find an extensive serviceman's file as I have for others but records have been lost or damaged. I don't know if a letter to the appropriate public agency would provide you any additional information. Even the Commonwealth Graves Commission doesn't have a gravesite for him.
It might help to do some research on his regiment and battalion and see if you can determine where they might have been in France around the time of his death.
My apologies that there wasn't more information available.

On the Anc****y list, scroll down to another entry - doesn't give much more info, but states "regarded dead 27/6/17", Theatre of war France.

Great follow up, Mike! I've got to get some breakfast in my gullet but that census info will be a real help when I can get started looking through baptisms and such.

Lewis Family in 1861 & 1851 censuses
Hi again,
Sorry about the delay. The Mrs. and I just watched the DVD, "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" with Jennifer Garner & Matthew McConaughey. Very cute movie. Cut into research time.
1861 England census, Middlesex, Chelsea, Chelsea North East, Saint Saviour Ecclesiastical District, Dist 1, page 50, address: 100 New Road:
(R.G. 9/36)
Thomas Lewis, 32, married, bricklayer, born Mddlsx, Chelsea
Emma Lewis, wife, 31, profession: bricklayer, born Middlsx, Chelsea
Emma Lewis, daughter, 11, born Mddlsx, Westminster
Mary Lewis, daughter, 9, scholar, born Mddlsx, Westminster
Thomas Lewis, son, 8, scholar, born Mddlsx, Chelsea
Charles Lewis, son, 6, scholar, born Mddlsx, Chelsea
Lucy Lewis, daughter, 4, born Middlsx, Chelsea
John Lewis, son, 1, born Middlsx, Chelsea
Mary A. White, Lodger, unmarried, 25, profession: servant, born Middlsx, Westminster
=======
1851 England census, Middlesex, Saint George Hanover Square, May Fair, Borough of Westminster, District 15, page 3, address: 11 Dalling Pond Mews:
Thomas Lewis, 23, married, profession: Carman, born Mddsx
Emma Lewis, wife, 22, profession: home, born Mddsx
Emma Lewis, daughter, 2, born Mddsx
=======
The only baptisms I could find for their children were two on the same date at a church in Chelsea:
Church: Saint Saviour, Chelsea, Middlesex
Name: Charles
Born: Apr 7, 1855
Baptised: Sep 26, 1858
Parents: Thomas & Emma Lewis
Abode: 100 New Road
Profession: Bricklayer
Church: Saint Saviour, Chelsea, Middlesex
Name: Lucy
Born Sep 30, 1857
Baptised: Sep 26, 1858
Parents: Thomas & Emma Lewis
Abode: 100 New Road
Profession: Bricklayer
I'm hoping Mike will work on finding the Lane side of the family in censuses. In the meantime, I'm going to work on finding a marriage for Thomas & Emma Lewis in Chelsea, their baptisms and whatnot.

Last msg for tonight
Surprise! Surprise!
It turns out Thomas Lewis DID become an undertaker after all:
1891 London, St. Marylebone, Rectory, District 10, 1 Bird Street:
Thomas Lewis, 62, undertaker, born London, May Fair
Jane Lewis, 54, wife, cook, born Essex, Chingford
Poline Dolski, 18, boarder, single, born Poland
You might recall that Thomas' son, Francis Lewis, was in the Marylebone Infirmary in this census (found on this thread).
There are over 79 Thomas Lewis marriages in the greater London area and 4 in Essex. I checked the Essex and Marylebone marriages but couldn't find a matching Jane. I forgot to check Kensington or St. George Hanover Square but will do so tomorrow.
As Thomas doesn't appear in the 1901 census, it appears he died sometime between 1891 and 1901. There are six possible Thomas Lewis deaths in the greater London area, none in Marylebone.
Also found the marriage of Thomas Lewis' son, Robert:
Date: 13 April 1884
Place: Wandsworth, Saint Mary Battersea
Groom: Robert Lewis, 22, bachelor, labourer, residence 12 Carpenter Road, father Thomas Lewis, profession: undertaker
Bride: Annie Tilbury, 18, spinster, residence 12 Carpenter Road, father Joseph Henry Tilbury, profession: labourer
Witnesses: W. Tilbury & Amy Lewis
Have to knock off for the night. More tomorrow.
Cary
